The Lovely Bones, by director Peter Jackson, is a heart-wrenching drama about a young girl who dies in a devastating murder. The fourteen year old's spirit tells the tale as she watches over her family, and the murderer, as the events after her death unfold. She has to decide which is stronger, her desire for vengeance for her murderer, and her love for her family, who need to heal.
Played by Oscar nominated Saoirse Ronan, Susie Salmon, narrates and guides the audience through her death, and the emotional and physical tirade it puts her family and friends through afterwards. The story goes on as her family fights to stay together through the tough times, and to find the one that has so aburptly taken their daughter away from them.
Ronan is not the only Oscar nominee within this star studded cast. She's joined by Oscar winners Rachel Weisz and Susan Sarandon, Michael Imperioli, Stanley Tuccie and Oscar nominee Mark Wahlberg.
Award winning director Peter Jackson picked up this script after being blown away by the novel from which it originated. Jackson is famous for movies such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong and District 9. He brings his fantasy touch to a deep and emotional suspense drama in all the right ways.
Adapted from the the first book by author Alice Sebold, the theatrical version of The Lovely Bones does not seem to do the book justice, but very few movies can. The story line does keep in tune to the book, but key points from the book seem to be missing from the movie. All in all though, an incredible story that Peter Jackson does not seem to let us down on.
